In Russia, there's a decrease in interest towards mangoes; however, consumers are increasingly turning their attention to other exotic fruits, whose prices are becoming more attractive. According to research by NTech, retail sales of fresh mangoes over the 12 months to June fell by 34.7% in monetary terms compared to the previous year. This decline followed a "mango boom" sparked by the pandemic, when sales of tropical fruits in some networks soared by 3-4.5 times.
Demand for mangoes in the current season is slightly higher than last year, which is linked to growing consumer confidence and expanded supplies from different countries. However, payment issues in foreign banks due to the risk of sanctions are complicating imports, especially from Egypt, a popular supplier of mangoes to Russia.
At the same time, interest in other exotic fruits, such as papaya, pitahaya, and mangosteen, is growing, and their availability on the market is increasing. This shift in demand is supported by stable or even reduced prices for exotic fruits compared to more traditional ones like bananas and apples, whose prices are rising. For instance, a kilogram of Egyptian mangoes in the supermarket costs 3.4 euros, 10% lower than last year's prices.
