At the base of Dai Hue mountain in Nam Anh commune, Nam Dan district, Nghe An province, ancient rose gardens with a distinctive aroma are cultivated, alongside persimmons that have faced a challenging season. The region is known for two specific varieties of roses, the rose apple and egg rose apple, which are currently being harvested. Conversely, the persimmon gardens have encountered a significant reduction in yield, with this year's production hitting a record low.
According to Mr. Ho Viet Hoa, Chairman of the Farmers' Association of Nam Anh Commune, despite the soaring prices for persimmons, many local families have been left with no fruit to sell due to the poor crop. Prices for soaked persimmons and egg persimmons have surged to unprecedented levels, yet the phenomenon of premature fruit drop has led to a drastic decrease in available harvest. This issue has persisted for years, with research yet to pinpoint the exact cause.
The commune, housing nearly 200 hectares of persimmon trees, has only managed to produce nearly 100 tons of persimmons this year, a stark contrast to previous years. The impact of this crop failure extends beyond the farmers to processing facilities that rely on a steady supply of persimmons. Weather conditions and pests have been speculated as potential factors contributing to the widespread fruit drop, further exacerbating the challenges faced by the community.
