Laos is actively working towards sustainable agricultural production with an aim to enhance the export of agricultural goods to China, leveraging the China-Laos Railway. The railway serves as a key conduit for facilitating trade between the two countries, particularly for the agriculture sector. A recent meeting between the Lao National Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LNCCI) and a Chinese business delegation delved into the prospects of exporting Laos' durian to the Chinese market, a sector showing promising growth due to the fertile agricultural land in Laos and the high demand in China.
Infrastructure development, notably the China-Laos Railway, has received significant investment from both the Lao and Chinese governments, underscoring the importance of this transport link in connecting Lao products with the vast Chinese market. The railway has already demonstrated its utility in the export of agricultural products, exemplified by a shipment of 390 tons of bananas from Vientiane to Beijing. This initiative is part of Laos' broader strategy to enhance its agricultural exports, which surpassed 1.4 billion U.S. dollars in 2023, contributing to 21.4 percent of the country's GDP.
The Lao government is focused on improving regulations and standards to promote the production, processing, and export of agricultural products, encouraging farmers to adopt quality control measures to meet the export requirements of the Chinese market. This approach aims not only to boost exports but also to attract foreign currency and mitigate high foreign exchange rates.
