In the Honghe Hani and Yi Autonomous Prefecture, Yunnan Province, the blueberry industry has emerged as a cornerstone for rural revitalization, enhancing local economic growth and farmers' incomes. The Mengzi City Blueberry Farming Centre showcases the region's commitment to agriculture, featuring automated greenhouses and high-quality blueberries that have captured both domestic and international markets.
Statistics from the Yunnan Provincial Government reveal that in 2023, Mengzi's blueberry cultivation spanned 1133 hectares, generating an output value of 2.040 billion yuan. This agricultural venture has uplifted 32 administrative villages and benefitted over 20,000 farmers. Jiang Huitie, a blueberry cultivation expert, highlighted the significant role of agricultural projects in boosting farmers' livelihoods, noting the industry's demand for labor and its contribution to local infrastructure and market revitalization.
The industry's growth has attracted many local youths, including graduates who return to engage in various capacities within the blueberry sector. Their involvement not only enhances their professional skills but also contributes to the economic prosperity of the region. One technician shared their experience in pest and disease control, emphasizing the importance of continuous learning and improvement to ensure high-quality produce and support regional economic development.
International collaboration has also played a role in the industry's success, with Peruvian agricultural expert Marcelo Vergaray working alongside Chinese colleagues for seven years. Vergaray's efforts, along with those of his team, have not only propelled the blueberry industry forward but have also significantly contributed to the social and economic well-being of the Mengzi community.
Through the combined endeavors of local and international experts, Mengzi's blueberry industry has become a pivotal element in the area's journey towards rural revitalization, offering a sustainable model for economic development and social improvement.
