The Government of Kazakhstan has announced a plan to bring back the famous Aport apples, known for their unique aroma and large size, to local and international markets. The Ministry of Agriculture and the National Agrarian Research and Education Center are spearheading the revival program, set to run from 2024 to 2028.
Aport apples require specific growing conditions, thriving at 850 to 1250 meters, a characteristic of the Almaty region's foothills. Unlike other apple varieties that take 4–6 years to fruit, Aport trees need 8–9 years, making them more challenging to cultivate. Despite this, their exceptional quality makes them highly sought after.
The program aims to start with the collection of Sivers apple seeds in 2024 and proceed with the development of national cultivation standards. By 2025, the plan includes planting seedlings on a 10-hectare plot, which will serve as a nursery for further propagation. The goal is to expand to a 100-hectare orchard, enabling large-scale production and potential export.
This initiative is not only about reviving an iconic apple variety but also involves private investors and specialized nurseries in its implementation. The Kazakh Research Institute of Fruit and Vegetable Growing will provide scientific support, ensuring the program's success and the Aport apple's return to prominence both at home and abroad.
