Could demand lead to an extension of the Egyptian sweet potato season?

The sweet potato campaign is progressing well in Egypt, with significant volumes exported so far this season. According to Kareem Al-Shorbagy, managing director of Al Kareem, demand could even lead to an extension of the season this year.

The exporter says, "Egypt has experienced a significant increase in sweet potato production this year, with exports rising by approximately 45% compared to last season. This translates to around 109,000 tons exported over 11 months of the 2023/2024 marketing season."

"We continue to enjoy strong demand in European markets. Egypt has become a leading sweet potato supplier to the European Union, surpassing the United States. Key importing countries include the Netherlands, France, and Italy, with growing interest from others like Romania, Germany, and Spain," Al-Shorbagy adds.

Increased production has led to lower prices for Egyptian sweet potatoes. Last season, falling prices even prompted growers in some regions to suspend harvesting. For Al-Shorbagy, this is rather a strength: "Egyptian sweet potato prices have remained competitive in the global market. The average price per kilogram is around 1 to 1.5 euros, which has helped boost demand compared to sweet potatoes from other origins."

The industry is betting on extending the season following the international success of the Egyptian origin. "We're moving towards that goal, perhaps as soon as this season if all goes well. The Egyptian sweet potato export season typically runs from August to January. However, there are expectations that it might extend further, potentially until May 2025, depending on the crop's quality and international demand. Increasing demand, large planted areas, greater use of technology in agriculture, and climate change are contributing to the season's extension."
