The Malaysian government has allocated RM12 million (approximately USD 2.55 million) for 2025 to enhance and modernize the onion supply chain, achieve self-sufficiency in onion production, and decrease import reliance. The initiative, announced by the Agriculture Department's director-general Datuk Nor Sam Alwi, focuses on developing infrastructure such as irrigation, storage, and drying facilities, alongside providing technical support and training to farmers. This effort is expected to lower the import dependence ratio, increase the self-sufficiency rate, and bolster food security while generating employment.
A pilot program initiated in Ladang Bikam, Perak, marks the beginning of a strategic, multi-phase effort to stabilize onion supply. This program includes the provision of resources like planting materials and marketing assistance. The government envisions this project to catalyze further development, aiming for a sustainable year-round onion production that aligns with national agricultural self-sufficiency goals.
To tackle challenges such as high labor costs and seasonal production inconsistencies, the government is promoting modern farming techniques. These include precision agriculture and mechanized planting, which are anticipated to enhance productivity and reduce losses. The initiative also addresses infrastructural and seed quality issues, pivotal for improving onion production outcomes.
Looking ahead, the government has outlined a strategic plan targeting a 30% self-sufficiency rate in onion production by 2030. This plan spans seed development to commercial-scale production, with significant acreage dedicated to onion cultivation across multiple states. By 2030, the initiative aims to cultivate over 1,347 hectares, producing more than 14,000 metric tonnes of onions, supported by an RM100 million (approximately USD 21.28 million) investment under the 13th Malaysia Plan. This comprehensive approach not only aims to boost local onion production but also to enhance agricultural resilience and long-term food security in Malaysia.
