Andrew Doré revitalizes farm with organic macadamias and banana products

Andrew Doré, after a 14-year tenure in Japan's corporate sector, transitioned to agriculture in South Africa, focusing on macadamia and banana farming. This shift was driven by a desire to contribute positively to society, leading him to acquire a 30-h farm named Villa Doré in KwaZulu-Natal. Initially a banana farm, Doré was concerned about the soil's condition and decided to introduce macadamia cultivation, aiming to rejuvenate the land through natural farming methods.

The transition to macadamia farming presented financial challenges, exacerbated by the removal of bananas, the farm's main cash crop. However, the situation led to the processing of banana products, a pivotal move supported by Doré's wife, Akane. They developed banana cider vinegar and green banana flour under their brand Adoré Nature, alongside banana chips, to diversify their business and overcome the initial challenges of agro-processing.

The COVID-19 pandemic severely impacted the macadamia industry, causing prices to plummet and putting small-scale farmers like Doré under financial strain. Despite these challenges, Doré's commitment to organic farming practices significantly reduced his input costs and improved soil health, contrasting with conventional methods that compromise soil biodiversity and rely heavily on fertilizers.

Doré's organic farm now thrives, with a rich ecosystem that supports a variety of life, contributing to the health of his macadamia orchards. He has also innovated by processing macadamia nuts into chips, a unique product that has allowed him to add value to his produce. Despite not being organically certified, Doré's products have found their way into premium supermarkets and health shops across major South African cities.

Looking forward, Doré aims to expand its product reach and promote sustainable farming practices. He is involved in a program supporting rural growers, advocating for diversified crops and integrated livestock farming to ensure a balanced and sustainable agricultural practice.
