FPAA honors industry members

The Fresh Produce Association of the Americas (FPAA) awarded Robert "Kip" Martin, the association's longtime legal counsel, the 2024 Pillar of the Industry during the annual SouthWest International Produce Expo (SWIPE).

This award, in its 12th year, recognizes individuals whose dedication, innovation, and integrity have left a mark on the fresh produce industry and the FPAA.

"Kip has been instrumental in safeguarding our association, offering invaluable legal counsel and support," said Lance Jungmeyer, president of the FPAA. "From guiding us through critical issues in Washington, D.C., to shaping the association's bylaws, Kip's influence has been far-reaching."

"His expertise and unwavering commitment have safeguarded our association, providing vital guidance and stability," added Raquel Espinoza, chairwoman of the FPAA and managing member of Produce House.

Martin's legal knowledge has been instrumental in various landmark efforts, including the expansion of FPAA membership across key states and his involvement with the Tomato Suspension Agreement.

Beyond his professional achievements, Martin has immersed himself in the Nogales community, contributing time and expertise to initiatives like the Greater Nogales & Santa Cruz County Port Authority and Nogales Economic Development Corporation. His work has helped solidify Nogales as a vital hub for the produce industry.

The FPAA has also named Javier "JJ" Badillo as the 2024 Member of the Year. This award, chosen by FPAA members, honors individuals who have made exceptional contributions to the association and the fresh produce industry during the past year.

With a career spanning over four decades, Badillo has distinguished himself as a leader and innovator in the tomato industry. Starting in 1981 in Nogales, Badillo rose through the ranks from quality control to sales, eventually becoming the managing member of Fresh International. His journey has also included leadership roles at companies like Meyer Tomatoes, Calavo, Delta Fresh, and Patagonia Orchards.

Badillo currently serves as Chairman of the FPAA's Tomato Division, where his efforts have had a great impact on the industry.

"His knowledge and expertise have earned him a distinguished reputation. JJ's tireless advocacy efforts as tomato division chairman have significantly impacted our industry, securing a stronger position for our producers and ensuring their voices are heard and interests represented," says Espinoza.

Badillo is also known for his mentorship and generosity. "JJ has been teaching a Master Class in the produce industry for over 20 years," said FPAA executive vice president Allison Moore. "His insights have shaped my understanding of how the industry works, and his passion for sharing knowledge is unmatched."

Badillo's leadership has been instrumental in advancing the FPAA's mission. His work on legal discussions and economic studies, including partnerships with the University of Arizona, and his advocacy at state and national levels have strengthened the association and the industry.
