On a recent occasion in Srinagar, Javid Ahmad Dar, the Minister for Agriculture Production, disclosed that Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has communicated with the Central Government regarding the abolition of import duty on apples from Iran. This issue has been a concern for Jammu and Kashmir's farmers, leading to a decrease in apple prices within the region due to the influx of Iranian apples.
The Minister acknowledged the complexity of the matter, citing it as involving diplomatic and trade relations between India and Iran. "Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has raised this matter with the Union Finance Minister. Once we receive a response, we will share the details with the media," Dar remarked during a media interaction at a function in Srinagar.
Additionally, Dar was present at a felicitation ceremony for the Jammu and Kashmir Processing and Integrated Cold Chain Association's (JKPICCA) new office bearers, including President Bashir Ahmad Naik. During the event, Dar outlined the government's strategies to support the horticulture sector, which is fundamental to the region's economy, engaging a significant portion of the population and contributing to the GDP.
Efforts to empower growers, such as expanding horticulture areas, rejuvenating orchards, and enhancing productivity, were highlighted. The government's focus also extends to addressing challenges like market access, transportation, and post-harvest management, aiming to uphold Jammu and Kashmir's status as a prominent horticultural producer.
Dar's speech underscored the government's commitment to innovation, technology adoption, and stakeholder involvement in the horticulture sector's growth. The event also saw discussions on the importance of post-harvest management and cold chain storage, with Nasir Aslam Wani, Advisor to the Chief Minister, emphasizing these aspects for sector support.
The gathering was attended by notable figures, including MLAs from various constituencies and leaders from the horticultural community, highlighting the collective effort towards improving the economic prospects of Jammu and Kashmir's farmers.
