A port designed for the future of international trade

"Chancay becomes a key hub for land and maritime transport in the region"

The inauguration of the first phase of the port of Chancay, in Peru, is a turning point for the region's exports to Asia. This ambitious project, led by Cosco Shipping Ports, has required an initial investment of 1.3 billion dollars and is already perceived as a key driver for maritime trade, not only in Peru, but also in neighboring countries such as Chile, Colombia and Ecuador.

The commercial and marketing manager of Cosco Shipping Ports in Chancay, Alonso Guinand, says that this first phase includes four docks with an initial operating capacity of one million TEUs. "The end goal of the project is to have 15 docks, which will require a total investment of approximately 4 billion dollars," he says.

Also, the port is designed to adapt to the market's needs. The reduction of transit times to Asia is one of its major achievements. According to Guinand, "the direct route offered by Chancay is reducing travel time by 10 days, from 36 to just 26 days. This is especially beneficial for perishable products such as fresh fruit, which will now arrive in better conditions and with more competitive shipping costs."

The economic impact of this new infrastructure has already been acknowledged. During the inauguration, the President of Peru said that the port could contribute 2% to the country's gross domestic product (GDP). But the benefits do not end there. "Chancay is becoming a key hub for land and maritime transport in the region, facilitating trade also with our neighboring countries," says Guinand.

This project will not only boost traditional exports, but will also serve as a catalyst for other developments in infrastructure, education and services in the area. Companies from, for example, the retail and healthcare sectors are already trying to find a place in and around Chancay, demonstrating its transformative potential.

Despite the initial challenges inherent in a project of this scale, Guinand is optimistic, given the support received from customers and the long-term prospects. "With this new port, Peru is strengthening its strategic position in global trade and taking a big step towards the consolidation of its role as a key exporter in the Asian market."

The port of Chancay is not just infrastructure; it's a stepping stone for the future of maritime trade in the region, capable of transforming local economies and positioning Latin America on the international scene.
