Monaghan has achieved a milestone by becoming the first producer in the UK and Ireland to cultivate peat-free mushrooms, eliminating the use of virgin peat in the cultivation process. This development is aligned with the company's objectives to reduce carbon emissions.
In the UK, mushrooms are a key component of the diet, with sales exceeding 1.5 billion portions annually. Traditionally, mushroom cultivation has relied on peat, a practice that poses risks to wetlands ecosystems. Monaghan has innovated by introducing a sustainable substrate comprised of recycled natural materials, thereby setting a new standard for sustainability and food production.
The introduction of peat-free mushrooms not only benefits the environment but also enhances product quality. These mushrooms are characterized by a firmer texture, whiter color, and extended shelf life. Currently, they are available in select Sainsbury's stores, with plans for broader distribution in the future.
Noel Hegarty, Chief Commercial Officer at Monaghan, stated, "At Monaghan, reducing our climate impact is at the heart of everything we do. Peat-free mushrooms are a breakthrough in our journey to net zero."
