Well known for bringing organic bananas to market, Organics Unlimited has added papayas to their product offering. "We had been planning to grow our tropical line for quite some time," says Mayra Velazquez de León, the company's President & CEO. "A lot of thought and relationship building went into finding the right growers who not only have quality organic product but are also aligned with our values. It's critical they are a good fit for our GROW program." This program aims to improve the quality of life for farmworkers as well as their communities. Every purchase supports vital social and educational programs, making a real difference in the lives of local communities.
Intenzza variety
The organic papaya variety Organics Unlimited introduced is the Intenzza variety. "It boasts a bright yellow exterior that stands out on the shelves," said Velazquez de León. The variety is known for its rich flavor, vibrant orange flesh, and exceptional sweetness, reaching up to 14 brix. As a subvariety of the Formosa category, Intenzza is medium to large in size, on average weighing between two and four pounds each. "Some of the highlights of Intenzza include its high sugar content, uniform size, as well as resilience during transportation."
Intenzza is grown in Colima, Mexico. Due to the recent colder weather, supply has been tight, but availability remains constant for Organics Unlimited. "Thanks to our strong grower relationship, we're able to rely on a steady supply to grow production along with sales." The expectation is for product to be available year-round with natural production peaks and lows. Production typically dips in the winter months.
New Year's resolutions
Distribution started back in August and GROW organic papayas have been received with tremendous enthusiasm. As a fairly traded offering, GROW is preferred by customers who appreciate the positive impact it brings to the growing regions. Demand in North America has been steady and strong. Recognized as a healthy option, demand will increase at the beginning of the year with health-focused New Year's resolutions. In markets with strong Latin American populations, papayas are a staple fruit in many households. As a result, these markets are seeing consistent demand year-round.
