Potato market update:

Cold weather boosts retail demand as European harvest wraps up

Retail demand should improve with recent cold weather setting in and in the lead-up to the holiday period. Consumption has increased in the last 10 days as temperatures have dropped. In stark contrast to last year's harvest, most growers have now completed harvests before the frosty conditions have begun.

Across Europe, liftings are all but finished. Values are now moving into a wider range. Problem samples that need to be moved are clearing at recent values but dry samples which are more suitable for longer-term outlets, including export, are attracting more interest.

In the U.K. M.Pipers are in demand but quality samples are not easy to find in the South. Bruising issues are common following a season of high D.M. levels and recently, some stores destined for packing have had to be unloaded for processing because of breakdown issues.
