In Ukraine, the cost of cucumbers and tomatoes has seen a sharp increase, as reported by Finportal. This rise in prices has led to a situation where consumers are exploring more affordable dietary options. The escalation in cucumber prices is especially pronounced. A comparison between supermarket and market prices reveals a notable difference.
In supermarkets, cucumber prices have escalated as follows: from 101.63 UAH ($3.67) to 145.50 UAH ($5.26) per kilo for regular cucumbers, smooth cucumbers from 100.54 UAH ($3.63) to 165.60 UAH ($5.98) per kilo, long cucumbers from 77.58 UAH ($2.80) to 159.00 UAH ($5.74) per kilo, spiky cucumbers from 106.38 UAH ($3.84) to 139.90 UAH ($5.05) per kilo, and short cucumbers from 91.53 UAH ($3.31) to 136.70 UAH ($4.94) per kilo. For tomatoes, red tomatoes went from 90.63 UAH ($3.27) to 107.60 UAH ($3.89) per kilo, pink tomatoes from 96.00 UAH ($3.47) to 114.90 UAH ($4.15) per kilo, and cream tomatoes from 78.08 UAH ($2.82) to 127.46 UAH ($4.60) per kilo.
At the Kyiv market, cucumbers are priced between 100 to 120 UAH ($3.61 to $4.33) per kilo, with imported varieties reaching 150 to 180 UAH ($5.42 to $6.50) per kilo. Red tomatoes are available for 70 to 90 UAH ($2.53 to $3.25) per kilo, and pink tomatoes for 110 to 115 UAH ($3.97 to $4.15) per kilo.
In the Odesa market, 'Pochatok', wholesale prices for red tomatoes range from 50 to 55 UAH ($1.81 to $1.99) per kilo, with fresh tomatoes priced from 26 to 30 UAH ($0.94 to $1.08) per kilo. Mikado tomatoes are significantly more expensive, costing between 160 and 250 UAH ($5.78 to $9.03) per kilo, with a wholesale price of 65 to 150 UAH ($2.35 to $5.42) per kilo. Ukrainian cucumbers in this market are priced between 140 and 170 UAH ($5.06 to $6.14) per kilo, with a wholesale price ranging from 100 to 150 UAH ($3.61 to $5.42) per kilo.
These elevated prices have prompted many Ukrainians to seek alternative food sources.
