The quality of the Spanish garlic in storage is good and the country has just enough stock to complete the sales season, as this year the area devoted to this crop has shrunk considerably.
"Most Spanish companies are limiting sales on the free market, outside the established supply contracts, because there's not much volume available," stated Luis Fernando Rubio, director of the National Association of Garlic Producers and Traders (ANPCA).
In 2024, the acreage fell by 14% over the previous year. The decrease was more pronounced for purple garlic, which for the first time fell below 40% of the total cultivated area. Last year, the area decreased by 17%. Thus, in the past two years, the area has fallen by more than 30% compared to the area cultivated in 2022.
Sales are calm and the sector is choosing to keep some stock. "There is garlic supply from Egypt and Türkiye. However, prices are high, so Spain and Europe are importing very little garlic, in general," Rubio said.
