Adriaan van Belzen, Daily Onions:

"Onion prices feel like Fugazi magic dust"

"That we have managed to increase prices this season despite having a record harvest is quite remarkable," says Adriaan van Belzen of Daily Onions. "We are now six months into the 2024 harvest season, and as usual, the final export weeks will be exceptional. I expect the export figures to grow even more intense from this point on."

"Apparently, there are strong reasons among the various stakeholders to keep prices this high, but to me, these prices feel like Fugazi magic dust," Van Belzen continued. "For export trade, it would be beneficial to have lower prices to discourage increased acreage and reduce competition from other countries growing more onions in the coming years. With onions, you never know, but maintaining these prices until the end of the season doesn't seem logical to me."
