From the perspective of producer Cristian Tozzi:

"The kiwi market is facing challenging times"

The Italian company Tozzi Frutta, which has 25 hectares of green kiwi fruit in production, is joined by numerous growers and suppliers from the main production areas of Italy The fruits are sold both in the country and abroad. "In the current year, production levels have rebounded to surpass those of previous years, with yields exceeding 20 tonnes per hectare. However, when viewed in context, the overall volume remains considerably lower than that observed in recent years. This year, we are witnessing an increase in the average fruit size, with a notable scarcity of smaller fruits intended for packaging in baskets," says Cristian Tozzi.

Tozzi outlines the current economic situation: "We are currently in a cyclical phase characterised by the harvesting of products from various production areas and their subsequent placement on the market. This situation is expected to continue for several weeks. In addition, the market is also supplied with products from Greece, which are very competitive. It is also possible that kiwis from the other hemisphere will continue to be supplied. As a result, there is a significant surplus of fruit and growers are competing to position it on the market."

Cristian Tozzi in his storage cells

Last year Tozzi invested in technology for a more competitive edge. "In order to improve storage and always obtain good kiwis from an organoleptic point of view, we have equipped our cells with a controlled atmosphere, which together with ethylene absorbers and residue-free ozone sanitisation, allows us to store the fruit for a longer period of time. It allows us to export to distant markets and to have high quality kiwis available until June."

Tozzi grows green, Hayward and Boerica kiwis, which are produced in Emilia Romagna, Lazio and Calabria.
