Exports of lychees from Mozambique to Europe are on an upward trajectory, driven by an increase in production, enhanced promotion, and technical support provided to local farmers. This information was shared by the Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Celso Correia, during a visit to a lychee production and processing facility in Catuane, MatutuĂne district, Maputo province. Mozambique's annual lychee output stands at approximately 55,000 tons, with production areas expanding.
Manica province is the leading producer, contributing 60% of the national output, followed by Maputo province. The main European markets for Mozambican lychees include England, France, Spain, Italy, and Germany. The sector generates an average annual revenue of US$3 million, with expectations for future growth. Challenges such as climate variations have impacted this year's production, but the upcoming export window is anticipated to bolster foreign currency earnings for Mozambique. In his visit, Minister Correia also engaged with tomato producers, addressing market supply and competition challenges, particularly from South Africa.
