Peruvian ginger exports fall short of 2023 results

In November 2024, Peruvian ginger exports fell sharply. The country exported 6,348 tons for $11.9 million. This represents a 14% decrease in volume and a 27% fall in value over the same month of last year. The average price of ginger also fell by 15% to $ 1.87 per kilogram.

This downward trend was also reflected in the cumulative year, which closed at 46,427 tons (34% less than in the previous year) and a total value of $100 million (-14%). However, a 34% increase in the average annual price, which reached $2.15 per kilogram, helped partially mitigate the negative impact on the exporters' income. Causes for the decline included poor weather conditions and a negative image in Europe, where there were concerns about the informal working methods of Peruvian companies, raising doubts about the quality of the ginger.

In November, Peru exported 6,185 tons of fresh ginger (96% of the total) for $ 11.4 million and an average price of $ 1.85 per kilogram. Processed ginger accounted for 4% of exports, with 163 tons and a turnover of $479,000, reaching an average price of $4.62 per kilogram.

Peruvian ginger reached 17 destinations in November 2024. The United States was the main market, with a 49% share, followed by the Netherlands with a 36% share, and Spain with 4%. Canada and the UK complete the top five destination markets. Average prices varied by country. In the US, the price stood at $1.95 per kilogram and in Spain, it reached $2.40 per kilogram.
