The government of Botswana has decided to phase out restrictions on vegetable imports, a move announced by the Minister of Lands and Agriculture in Gaborone. This adjustment will unfold in stages and will involve consultations with stakeholders both within the country and abroad. Initially, the lifting of import bans will include commodities such as turmeric, patty pan, pumpkin, sweet potatoes, green peas, mushrooms, and more, effective immediately.
A subsequent phase will see the inclusion of beetroot, butternut, onions, potatoes, and watermelons, with plans to implement these changes gradually by 1 April of the following year. This strategy will be periodically reviewed in alignment with the Southern African Customs Union guidelines. The Department of Land and Agriculture has indicated that the imposition or lifting of import restrictions will be contingent on the domestic production levels and availability of these commodities.
