"Strong start for Biomasters: growth in sales and memberships"

Exactly one year ago, BioMasters became part of FruitMasters, intending to connect supply and demand for organic and biodynamic hard and soft fruit. Now, 365 days later, Business Unit Manager Peter van der Schoot reflects on a successful year with satisfaction. "BioMasters got off to a flying start with significant growth in sales and the addition of new growers."

Retailers are increasingly focusing on the organic segment every year, leading to rising demand for organic fruit both nationally and internationally. With the integration of BioMasters, FruitMasters offers a one-stop shop for hard and soft fruit, including organic varieties sourced directly from growers. "With BioMasters, we can leverage all of FruitMasters' USPs—such as quality, logistics, marketing, and packaging development—for the organic category as well. This provides retail and food service sectors with a one-stop shopping solution for ordering," says Peter. With an annual capacity of 5 million kilos of fruit, BioMasters has made a strong start in further growing the organic category.

Demeter certified
Shortly after its launch, BioMasters achieved Demeter certification in May 2024. This international quality mark symbolizes excellence in biodynamic agriculture and food.

Biodynamic fruit grower Tim Moerman, owner of Loverdale Ter Linde in Oostkapelle, has been part of BioMasters since its inception. His farm is the oldest biodynamic farm in the Netherlands, established in 1926. From its dedicated organic grading station in Kapelle, BioMasters serves the market with 5 million kilos of soft and top fruit capacity. Tim is also actively involved in promoting organic farming in the Netherlands. Since taking over the farm in 2017, he has transformed it into a fully biodynamic operation, integrating fruit growing, arable farming, and livestock farming. The 30-hectare orchard, which produces apples, pears, and nuts, has been continuously optimized. In collaboration with BioMasters, Tim conducts trials on new varieties and contributes to discussions about the future of the organic sector.

Grower guarantee
The high demand at BioMasters provides member growers with a guaranteed purchase of their produce. BioMasters also offers the possibility of a guaranteed price based on the market segment. However, the biggest challenge remains that demand is growing faster than cultivation. To meet this demand, it is essential to expand the acreage through current growers, new growers, and converters. "We are seeking both organic growers and converters willing to join the cooperative and expand their operations, for example by planting club varieties. Together with growers, we will create multi-year plans focused on improving financial returns. We aim to offer growers a competitive payout price, enabling them to continue innovating in variety development and supply chain optimization," explains Peter.

Looking to the future
BioMasters aims to continue its expansion in the coming year, including the development of new varieties in both hard and soft fruit. Several new varieties, proven successful abroad, were planted organically last year and are showing promising results. These include the apple varieties Bloss and Tessa, as well as the redberry Skoander. Peter remains optimistic about the year ahead. "BioMasters is full of energy as we work to achieve our ambitions for 2025. Together with our growers, we aim to make significant progress again this year," Peter concludes.

BioMasters will also be on the FruitMasters stand at the upcoming Fruit Logistica in Berlin
