While January 2025 is when the Nickey Gregory Company, a full-line fresh produce distributor, repacker, and processor based in Atlanta, Georgia, turned 25 years old, let's just say the company got a jump-start on celebrating the milestone back in October. "We celebrated at IFPA in Atlanta with a big two-day open house here," says Andrew Scott, VP of business development and marketing for the Nickey Gregory Company. "We moved into this newly renovated building here on the Atlanta State Farmers Market during COVID in May of 2020. So we didn't have a chance back then to have an open house gathering at our main wholesale warehouse."
In October, visitors got a chance to walk through the company's two warehouses that total of 150,000 square feet. That's a long way from how the company started in 2000 by Nickey Gregory and Cheryl Gregory. "They started here with a single cooler in an old gas station," says Scott. "While they were first more into transportation and logistics, they began doing some wholesaling along the way. It was a controlled growth for the company."
Moving into processing
By 2017, the company was housing four warehouses that it then consolidated into the two that exist today. Then, in 2018, it expanded into something new. "We started our own processing division, Family Fresh Foods, then," says Scott. "We were buying so many processed and fresh-cut items from secondary suppliers and now we do all of that ourselves because we wanted to diversify and expand our business."
Then, in October 2024, it launched a retail support division to service independent retail stores in Alabama, Georgia, and South Carolina. "We again wanted to become more diversified. Our customer base is pretty heavily foodservice operators and we wanted to get into retail as well," says Scott.
Looking into expansion
From here on in, the company also has its eye on more growth–particularly, expanding that processing division. It currently accounts for about 40,000 square feet of Nickey Gregory Company's space and that space, says Scott, can easily be doubled.
Fresh-cut and processing products and some of its retail packs will be on display at the company's booth, #701, at the upcoming Southern Exposure show on March 6-8 in Orlando. It's a show the company attends every year. "It's a great show. They get decision-makers there and some good quality people walking the show," says Scott. "Not only do we have our customers there but our vendors are there as well–a lot of the grower-shippers we do business with also exhibit there. We'll also have buyers walking the floor so it's two-fold for us by having our vendor base there as well as our customers."
