In 2023-24, Kashmir exported 1.31 million metric tons of apples, as reported by government data in the Assembly. This follows exports of 1.75 million metric tons in 2022-23 and 1.21 million metric tons in 2021-22. The government has initiated various measures to strengthen apple marketing and enhance sales nationwide.
Jammu and Kashmir's apple production reached 1.86 million metric tons in 2023-24, compared to 2.72 million metric tons in 2022-23 and 2.34 million metric tons in 2021-22. Despite production changes, horticulture remains a key economic sector. Officials attribute yield variations to weather and market dynamics, emphasizing ongoing interventions for sector stability and growth.
The government has established 24 fruit and vegetable mandis across Jammu and Kashmir, with 13 more in development. These mandis facilitate surplus apple sales nationwide. Additionally, 17 mandis are integrated with the e-NAM portal, enabling electronic transactions. In 2024-25, e-NAM trade volumes reached 94,346.42 metric tons, generating Rs 594.17 crore in turnover. Over 50,000 farmers and traders are registered, gaining direct buyer access.
To expand market reach, the government organizes buyer-seller meets in cities like Kolkata, Hyderabad, Jammu, and Srinagar. These events connect local apple growers with large-scale buyers, enhancing visibility and demand for Kashmiri apples. Officials state these initiatives aim to secure better prices and profitability for farmers.
The government is modernizing the apple industry with infrastructure upgrades and improved market linkages. Cold storage facilities, enhanced packaging, and grading standards are among the measures to improve apple quality and shelf life, aiding competitiveness in national and international markets.
Apple growers have expressed concerns over transport costs, imported apple competition, and unpredictable weather conditions.
