Moroccan cucumbers are among the cheapest in Europe. According to a report by Hort Info, referring to Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) data from 2014 to 2023, Moroccan cucumber prices were around €0.24 per kilogram in 2014, rising to €0.29 per kilogram by 2023. Meanwhile, Spanish cucumbers are 37.68% more expensive than those from the Netherlands, and 115.9% more expensive than what Moroccan growers receive.
However, Moroccan exporters are reporting lower demand and prices than in the previous season. Mohamed Ennaciri, Managing Director of Victory Fresh, says: "Our acreage and volumes have remained stable this season, but we are noticing less demand for Moroccan cucumbers compared to last season. We are fortunate to export all our production under contract, which is a much more stable situation than our peers. Yet, most of our jobs this season consist of segmentation tomatoes and peppers, where demand is more interesting."
"For our European markets, we grow a smaller-sized Dutch variety, which is the preference of export markets," adds Mr. Ennaciri.
"On the local Moroccan market too, we're noticing a drop in demand and prices, which are currently at around 0.4 EUR at farm gate," continues the grower.
According to another industry source, Moroccan cucumber prices have fallen significantly in recent weeks. The same source adds that the drop in demand is normal and usual at this time of year, with the arrival of domestic harvests on the European market, and that the fall in prices does not affect Moroccan exporters who operate under contract.
