Packaging company Jonatura GmbH was one of the debutants at this year's Biofach. "We aimed to present our compostable packaging options to the organic trade audience and to attract potential new customers. Our presence at the trade fair has more than fulfilled our expectations because we were able to make many high-quality contacts and were confirmed in our actions by the great interest shown by visitors on site. We are also convinced that our range of solutions will establish itself in this market segment," says Oliver Mielke, co-founder and co-managing director of the company based in Möhnesee-Echtrop (Germany).
Jonatura GmbH was founded in 2019 by Johannes Schröder and Oliver Mielke. Both come from the conventional packaging industry and wanted to make a change. The huge interest in sustainable packaging has also encouraged them in their decision, says Mielke, looking back. "So far, our solutions have mainly been used in the food sector, for example, to package food supplements, coffee, tea, meat, etc. But they have also been well received in many other areas, such as cosmetics, medicine, and industry. We also offer special packaging solutions for a wide range of fruit and vegetables, including carrots, apples, and pears. This range extends from ready-made bags to roll goods for packaging machines."
Co-founder and managing director Oliver Mielke represented Jonatura GmbH at this year's Biofach. It was the company's fourth time in Nuremberg.
PPWR regulation accelerates product development
"All forecasts currently point to significant growth in compostable and bio-based packaging beyond 2030," says Mielke, with the PPWR packaging regulation in mind. "The regulation stipulates that from 2027, certain areas of application, such as individual packaging for tea and coffee, will even require compostable packaging. But lightweight fruit and vegetable bags are also affected by this change in the law. The development of compostable packaging materials is now progressing very rapidly and will play an increasingly important, if not decisive, role in the coming years, especially in the fresh food sector. In this respect, I am convinced that the so-called 'Cradle to Cradle' principle (term for closed raw material cycles, ed.) will establish itself in many packaging areas," the packaging expert explains.
The market for sustainable/compostable packaging is a growing market. "Packaging is always needed, and the sustainable idea is increasingly becoming the focus of the respective user. To continue to engage in dialog with representatives from a wide range of industries, we will be exhibiting at Ipack-IMA in Milan this year. We are also planning to attend Interpack, Scanpack, and Hispack in Barcelona," he concludes.
