Turkish vegetables dominate Chisinau market amid rising prices

At Chisinau's central market, a wide variety of seasonal vegetables has recently appeared, but the majority comes from Turkey. Vendors are offering tomatoes, cucumbers, radishes, and cabbage, though shoppers are hesitant due to high prices and prefer to buy only essential items.

Fresh seasonal vegetables arrived two days ago, but vendors complained about low customer demand. Prices are a key factor:

  • Tomatoes: 35-65 MDL/kg (≈1.75-3.25 EUR/kg)
  • Cucumbers: 20-70 MDL/kg (≈1.00-3.50 EUR/kg) (local cucumbers are also available)
  • Radishes: 50-55 MDL/kg (≈2.50-2.75 EUR/kg), depending on size
  • Cabbage: 25 MDL/kg (≈1.25 EUR/kg) for last year's stock, while fresh cabbage costs up to 35 MDL/kg (≈1.75 EUR/kg)

Many customers browse without purchasing, carefully considering their options.

According to the National Bureau of Statistics, food prices increased in February compared to January:

  • Vegetables rose by 2.1%
  • Fruits increased by 1.6%
