Chile is the world's second-largest avocado consumer

If there is one food that cannot be missing from the Chilean table, it's avocado. Its versatility and flavor make it a star product of local cuisine. The numbers confirm it: in 2024, Chileans consumed a record 8.6 kilos of avocado per person per year, positioning the country as the world's second-largest consumer of avocado per capita, only behind Mexico.

What is driving this increase in consumption? A key factor is the product's availability in the local market. According to data provided by the Chilean Avocado Committee, there's been a significant growth in domestic consumption over the last decade. A few years ago 30% of the national production stayed in the country, today this figure has risen to almost 50%.

Prices have also played a fundamental role. During the last few years, avocado prices have remained affordable, with prices starting at $176 (ODEPA) per kilo in wholesale markets. This stability has allowed more people to incorporate it regularly into their diet.

Avocado is loved for its flavor and versatility. Chileans consume it in meals, salads, ceviches, sushi, and even in soups. In addition, its high content of healthy fats and essential nutrients makes it a key superfood in the national diet.

Avocado is also an important economic engine. According to the Chilean Avocado Committee, the Chilean avocado market generates around $700 million a year, consolidating Chile as a relevant player in the industry.

By taking advantage of their supply and its impact on prices, Chileans have reaffirmed their love for this fruit, demonstrating that avocado is not just a fad, but a fundamental food in Chile.
