In recent years, the productivity of orchards in the Republic of Moldova has significantly increased, both for stone fruits (cherries, apricots, peaches, plums) and pome fruits (apples, pears, quinces).
This information was shared by Vasile Șarban, State Secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture, during the Moldova Agrară broadcast.
What do the numbers show?
- Stone fruits: Average yields have risen from 4.2 tons/ha to over 8 tons/ha.
- Pome fruits: Now exceeding 10 tons/ha.
According to Șarban, this improvement is due to the transition from traditional orchards to intensive and super-intensive orchards, as well as the use of vegetative rootstocks.
However, despite higher productivity, Moldova's total fruit production in 2024 dropped by 18% compared to the previous year, falling from 798,000 tons to 659,000 tons.
The biggest declines were seen in:
- Apple production (-14%)
- Plum production (-50%)
- Meanwhile, cherry and apricot harvests remained stable.
In summary, the total number of orchards has decreased, but they have become more productive.
