Fiji boosts mushroom production with new equipment and training

Fiji imports roughly 100 tons of mushrooms annually, valued at approximately $1 million. To address this dependency, the Ministry of Agriculture is implementing measures to enhance local production capabilities. Recent developments include the introduction of new equipment aimed at supporting local mushroom cultivation.

During a ceremony at the Legalega Research Station in Nadi, Minister for Agriculture Vatimi Rayalu highlighted the role of 13 newly introduced shredders. These machines are expected to aid local mushroom farmers and improve livestock feed quality. Rayalu stated, "This initiative will also support sustainable livelihoods by improving livestock feed quality and expanding mushroom farming opportunities."

The shredders are part of Phase 3 of the China-Fiji Juncao Technology Project. Supported by China Aid, this project focuses on enhancing mushroom production and improving livestock feed. The initiative has trained over 2,800 individuals and distributed millions of Juncao grass cuttings and mushroom substrates across Fiji. It has provided particular support to more than 200 farmers during the COVID-19 pandemic.
