Early demand for Sharath grapes in India amid low yields

In the Indian state of Karnataka, grapes are cultivated across approximately 20,000 hectares, with peak harvest expected during April and May. Primary production regions include Chikkaballapur, Bangalore Rural, Vijayapura, and Belagavi, from where most of the produce is directed to neighboring states. Farmers have experienced poor pricing over the past two to three years, but this season shows indications of stronger market engagement.

Several grape varieties are grown in the region, such as Dilkush, RK Gold, Sonaka, Red Blue, Sharath, and Seedless. Current market activity reflects heightened demand for the Sharath variety, with prices ranging from $1.33 to $1.81 per kilogram. Traders have begun approaching growers for advance procurement, offering assurances of competitive rates.

Weather conditions have affected output across several districts. While Vijayapura and Belagavi typically contribute higher production volumes, adverse weather has lowered yield expectations this year. Similar conditions have been reported in Chikkaballapur and Bangalore Rural, where output is also below standard expectations.

According to grape trader Harikumar, "Specifically, there is a huge demand for the Sharath variety. The season hasn't officially started yet, but demand is already on the rise. We have already assured grape growers that we will purchase from them. The lack of sufficient yields in Maharashtra has caused shortages. Likewise, the lower yields of the Sharath variety in our state have created strong demand."

Unseasonal rainfall and persistent fog have been reported as factors impacting yield across several grape varieties, including Sharath and K-Sharath. In Maharashtra, another key grape-producing state, yields have also declined, further influencing regional market prices and increasing pre-season procurement activity.
