Volmary GmbH on the domestic cultivation of peanuts:

"We have now also achieved good results in organic cultivation"

In the context of climate change, the cultivation of various nuts, including peanuts, is also receiving increasing attention. To further promote domestic cultivation and support the respective cultivation pioneers, Volmary GmbH is also dedicating itself to breeding new varieties for cultivation in the domestic climate. "Climate change is bringing about changes throughout Europe, including in Germany and neighboring countries. I have been familiar with the cultivation and processing of peanuts since my childhood. This makes it easy for me to pass on my experiences to both newcomers and experienced peanut growers," says Suyun Rakhmonov, the company's customer advisor for peanuts.

Volmary currently offers two varieties, of which the larger and more productive plant 'Salomat' is best suited for commercial outdoor cultivation. The variety is available both as young plants and as seeds. Rakhmonov: "Sowing in the field takes place at a soil temperature of over 18 °C. Optimal growth temperatures are between 25 °C and 30 °C. Sandy, permeable soils are ideal for this. In 2024, I carried out initial trials with Salomat on an organic farm in the Schrobenhausen region of Bavaria and achieved good results." Neuland.bio, an Austrian vegetable growing company that has been growing organic peanuts for around eight years, is now also one of Volmary GmbH's customers.

Insight into peanut cultivation.

Peanuts usually require a sunny location and warm temperatures during vegetation. Depending on the weather, the cultivation period in the field is about 19 to 20 weeks (approx. 135 to 140 days). "Sowing or planting can be planned from the end of May. The ripening time of the peanuts should be considered so that the harvest can typically take place from the beginning of October," Rakhmonov further recommends.

The peanuts are still sold mainly through local channels, such as on-farm sales or regional markets. Some producers are already experimenting with further processing, for example, to produce peanut oil, peanut butter, or other products suitable for direct marketing. According to Rakhmonov, the possibility of marketing local peanuts through food retail or wholesale depends on the cultivation and demand. "However, regional products are becoming increasingly popular, which, in my opinion, could represent an opportunity for distribution through larger retail chains."

At expoSE 2024, the range of varieties in the peanut sector was also in the spotlight. A wide range of varieties has already been developed for sweet potatoes (Erato).
