Uruguay gains access to Brazilian market for fresh kaki exports

Uruguay can now export fresh kaki (Diospyros kaki) to the Federative Republic of Brazil after the regulation formalizing this authorization was published in the Official Journal of the Union (DOU). Brazil is a market of more than 211 million inhabitants, and being able to export to this destination opens a window of opportunity for this Uruguayan incipient production sector.

Commercial kaki production in Uruguay is recent, with crops located in the north of the country (departments of Salto and Paysandú) and in the south (Canelones and San José). The harvest runs from March to approximately May. So far, the main export destinations have been the European Union -especially Spain- and, to a lesser extent, Canada.

It is worth mentioning that this process was carried out within the framework of the market round table for citrus and other fruits, coordinated by the International Affairs Unit of the Ministry of Livestock, Agriculture and Fisheries, with the active participation of the General Directorate of Agricultural Services and the Office of Programming and Agricultural Policy of the MGAP, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and the Union of Fruit and Vegetable Producers and Exporters of Uruguay (Upefruy).

The efforts made by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Embassy of Uruguay in Brazil were key to achieving this opening.

This new commercial access reinforces the competitiveness of Uruguay's fruit sector and opens up promising prospects for the expansion of fresh kaki exports.
