Spanish planting of extra-early and early potatoes on the rise

In 2025, the area of extra-early and extra potatoes in Spain increased by almost 4% to more than 17,700 hectares, according to data from the Spanish Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Food (MAPA).

The area devoted to extra-early varieties increased by 4.5%, going from 2,117 hectares in 2024 to 2,212 hectares this year. This area is expected to yield 55,951 tons, 4.5% more than the previous 53,556 tons achieved in 2024. The Canary Islands lead this variety's production in terms of surface area, with 892 hectares, 2.7% less than the 917 hectares it had last year. Production in the Canary Islands decreased by 11.4%, from 23,260 tons to 20,600 tons.

The area devoted to extra-early varieties decreased by 1.5%, going from 791 hectares last year to 779 hectares this year. In contrast, production increased by 0.5%, reaching 20,525 tons. The area in Murcia increased by 19.4% to 370 hectares, and production grew by 46.9%, reaching 11,840 tons.

Moreover, the area devoted to early potato varieties in the country increased by 3.2% over the previous year, going from 13,105 hectares last year to 15,530 hectares in 2025. Andalusia leads with 5,019 hectares, 0.7% more than the 4,983 hectares it had last year. In that region, Seville stands out with 3,700 hectares, 100 more than in the previous season. Murcia ranked second with 3,200 hectares, i.e., 3.2% more than the 3,100 hectares last season.

The Valencian Community ranked third, with 1,562 hectares and a 7.4% increase in area. The province of Valencia has 992 hectares, 47 more than in 2024. Galicia increased its area by 20.4%, going from 1,052 hectares to 1,267 hectares. Pontevedra devoted 649 hectares to this crop, increasing its area by more than 20% compared to last year's 510 hectares. In contrast, the area in the Balearic Islands decreased by 10%, from 600 hectares to 540.
