Planting completed for PotatoEurope 2025 demonstration fields in Lelystad

Preparations for PotatoEurope 2025 are progressing steadily. In early April, demonstration fields were planted under favorable conditions at the Open Crops site of Wageningen University & Research (WUR) in Lelystad. Jacob de Jong, farm manager of the WUR business unit, oversees the 25 hectares of harvesting demonstration fields and reported a smooth start to the planting season.

The mid-early potato variety Alegria has been selected for the demonstration fields. Known for its yield potential, drought resistance, and suitability for both fresh consumption and processing, Alegria produces oval tubers with light-yellow flesh. Its moderate to low susceptibility to common potato diseases adds to its appeal for growers. Following harvest, the potatoes will be marketed through Schaap Holland, based in Biddinghuizen.

To support crop quality, the seed potatoes were treated with Maxim. Additionally, Amistar and a liquid phosphate fertilizer were applied in the row. The soil—marine clay with approximately 30% silt content—had an appropriate crop rotation history, with winter wheat grown last year, followed by a green manure crop of yellow mustard, which was incorporated into the soil in December. Fertilization was applied according to standard recommendations, without the use of animal manure. Planting was carried out with an in-row spacing of 26 centimetres.

De Jong noted that weather conditions contributed positively to planting. "We've had a relatively dry winter and spring, with frost still occurring in February. The soil now crumbles well, providing favorable conditions for this season's crop. An early start should allow us to apply desiccation in early August and support a successful harvest for the demonstrations."

PotatoEurope 2025, scheduled for September 3 and 4, will feature live harvesting demonstrations of machinery from several manufacturers, including AVR, Dewulf, Grimme, and Ropa. Attendees will be able to observe various techniques and technologies in practice.

Beyond harvesting demonstrations, the event will host exhibitors presenting developments in potato cultivation, processing, and sales. Organizers aim to facilitate knowledge exchange and industry engagement among professionals involved in the potato sector.
