The supply of mangoes in the U.S. is increasing as the Mexican season ramps up week after week. "The U.S. is currently receiving a plentiful supply of high-quality Honey mangos out of Mexico," says Galen Johnson, Senior Director of Sales for Mission Produce. Johnson adds that the variety (also known as Ataulfo mangoes) is a highly anticipated seasonal variety known for its size (smaller than round mangoes with a smaller seed) as well as for its sweetness and fiberless flesh. "We'll be filling Honey mango programs until the season closes, which is expected around June or July."

Also out of Mexico, the company is sourcing light volumes of Haden and Tommy Atkins mangos to start, and availability is expected to improve as the season progresses.
This supply from Mexico is complemented by lighter supply from Guatemala, Nicaragua, and Costa Rica. "While mangoes from Central America are expected to peak in April, Mexico's season will continue into the fall," says Johnson.
Strong supply window
This is all coming into a period–generally May through July–that is the strongest period of mango supply, and for Mission, that means it will bring in its World's Finest Mangos™ from these several origins to meet strong summertime demand.
© Mission ProduceThat demand peaks for key events such as Cinco de Mayo–the biggest mango holiday of the year¹. "Mango availability is expected to strengthen as we get closer to May, just in time for Cinco de Mayo," says Johnson, adding that this is the top opportunity to drive mango sales, and as part of that, Mission Produce is also building custom ripe programs. "With Cinco de Mayo on a Monday this year, we're looking at large orders for the full week leading up to the holiday, and many promotions are starting the Wednesday before."
As for the mango market, following a successful Peruvian mango season, the market is strong. "Demand has outpaced supply throughout March," says Johnson. "The industry anticipates mango demand to continue building as we head into the summer months. Volume projections across all origins are up compared to last year due to favorable weather and growing conditions.¹
