The European Commission is considering imposing tariffs of up to 25 percent on a wide range of U.S. exports, with a particular focus on agricultural products such as almonds, cranberries, sweet corn, and orange juice. According to an internal document seen by POLITICO, the move comes in response to recent U.S. trade actions and aims to apply pressure through duties on key American goods.
Based on 2024 import data from Eurostat, the targeted goods account for €22.1 billion in U.S. exports to the EU. The Commission had initially aimed to match €26 billion in value to reflect the perceived economic impact of the U.S. trade measures.
The final vote by EU capitals on the countermeasures is scheduled for Wednesday. If approved, most of the tariffs are set to take effect on May 16, while others—including those on almonds—would be implemented beginning in December.
