Tjonki Tse started as managing director of Bel Impex last week. After a sabbatical, this marks his return to the exotic trade. "I see it as a challenge to complement the products this company is strong in with Asian trade," he said.
So when Tjonki was approached by Bel Impex a month and a half ago, he didn't have to think long. "The conversation took place in an informal setting, and I see many opportunities to explore new activities alongside the company's established product lines. Bel Impex specialises in small exotic products. Items like cassava, plantains, eddoes, taro, and long beans are among our top sellers, but we also supply niche items like lemongrass and baby corn. The company is a regular supplier to four Dutch supermarket chains and also delivers to retailers like Amazing Oriental."

"In addition to these products sourced from countries like Costa Rica, Peru, and Ecuador, I want to expand exotic imports with Asian trade, starting with China," says Tjonki. "That's where I've built my expertise and network over the years. In the coming period, I'll be reconnecting with former contacts and reaching out to new ones to explore opportunities in the Asian market. I strongly believe in the power of collaboration, so I will also seek partnerships with other Dutch players in this field."
Bel Impex moved into a new distribution centre in Nootdorp a few years ago. "The facilities are in place; we just need to bring a bit more structure to some areas, but that's a challenge I welcome," says Tjonki. "We have a lot to offer the market. As an experienced supply chain manager, we have complete control over the process from farm to shelf. That way, we relieve our customers of extra work and worry. Our clientele includes major supermarket chains, catering wholesalers, ethnic supermarkets, and speciality stores."
